Educational Development

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Madison County (MS) Alumnae Chapter is dedicated to providing quality educational development programs for community youth. Programs including ACT workshops, college fairs, mentoring initiatives, and scholarships are provided each year to promote academic development, increase youth self-esteem, and provide increased access to cultural activities. The chapter provides volunteers for local youth programs and also provides financial support to high schoolers eligible for participation in dual-enrollment programs.

Delta Academy

The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is a national initiative coordinated on the local level to support the development of young females (ages 11-14). The goals of Delta Academy are to help young girls avoid the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem, and crippled futures. Our chapter provides monthly activities and field trips with trained volunteers to augment educational development through engagement in STEM activities, personal development and cultural activities, leadership opportunities, and public service opportunities. The program is designed to prepare young girls for full participation as leaders in the 21st Century.

Delta GEMS
(Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully)

Delta GEMS is an expansion program of Delta Academy that is geared toward development of adolescent girls (ages 14-18). The program aims to provide a framework for achieving goals and dreams through the development of a “can do” attitude and important academic and life skills. The program seeks to grow compassionate, caring, and community-minded young women. Our chapter provides monthly activities and field trips with trained volunteers to focus on goal-setting, career-planning, road-mapping for college and beyond, individual growth, and self-reflections.

May Week

May Week is a national program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and involves designating time in May to highlight the academic and professional achievements of members of the community, as well as provide events that emphasize the importance of higher education. Madison County (MS) Alumnae Chapter celebrates May Week by highlighting the academic achievement of high school seniors, along with celebrating the artistic achievements of middle school students. Scholarships and stipends are provided to African American high school seniors, and awards are presented to middle schoolers providing artistic works.

Warming up with STEAM

Our chapter partners with area organizations to provide science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics(STEAM) workshops for children in the community. Warming up with STEAM gives Pre-K through fifth grade students an opportunity to experience science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics by engaging in fun, interactive, hands-on learning activities.
